The typical procedure for a spectrum analysis is listed below.
1. Select a frequency range of interest, number of points, and sweep mode.
2. Select which receivers are of interest by assigning response variables to the traces (e.g., b2 for the port 2 test receiver)
3. Activate the internal source(s) if needed as a stimulus and program accordingly
4. Perform a receiver calibration if needed (unusual reference plane, using a broadband/mm-wave/multiport system…)
5. Attach signals and modify bandwidth, averaging and/or detection method to observe spectral content in the manner desired
Primary Application Menus and Spectrum Analysis Dialogs and Menus
The primary menu and dialog set for Spectrum Analysis measurement on the APPLICATION menu, the SPA SETUP menu, and the related dialog boxes is shown below. After clearing the entry SPECTRUM ANALYSIS APPLICATION dialog box, the SPA SETUP menu appears. When changing from Spectrum Analysis to another application, a similar exit dialog box appears, and when cleared, resolves into the APPLICATION menu in the new application mode.

IF
1. APPLICATION Menu – Typical APPLICATION menu variant with Option 49 equipped on VNA.
2. SPECTRUM ANALYSIS Mode Change Dialog Box – Provides options for canceling or saving setup and proceeding by selecting Continue.
3. APPLICATION Menu – Spectrum Analysis mode selected.
4. SPA SETUP Menu – After APPLICATION menu Spectrum Analysis Setup button is selected.
5. To exit Spectrum Analysis mode, select another application button on the top of the APPLICATION menu.
6. New Application Dialog Box.
Changing to Spectrum Analysis Mode
When the APPLICATION menu is set to a non-Spectrum Analysis application mode and Spectrum Analysis mode is selected, the SPECTRUM ANALYSIS dialog box appears. The dialog provides opportunities to:
• Save the current instrument setup as an Active Channel Setup and Calibration .CHX file and then either Cancel or Continue.
• Cancel out of the change to Spectrum Analysis application mode, and remain in the current application mode.
• Continue into Spectrum Analysis application mode.
Changing From Spectrum Analysis Mode to Another Application Mode
Similarly, when the APPLICATION menu is set to Spectrum Analysis application mode, and another application mode is selected, the new applicationdialog box appears. The dialog provides the opportunities to:
• Save the current instrument setup as an Active Channel Setup and Calibration .CHX file and then either Cancel or Continue.
• Cancel out of the change to the new application mode and remain in Spectrum Analysis application mode.
• Continue into the new application mode.
